The bawdy and charming comedy She Stoops to Conquer, first performed in 1773, examines romance, mistaken identity, social manners and shyness, as well as the universal notion of learning to be true to oneself. The daughter of a well-to-do country man is introduced to the son of a wealthy aristocrat in hopes of a brilliant match. The daughter soon realizes her proposed fiancé is tense and uncomfortable around women of his status, yet quite the opposite around lower-class females. Tongue-tied and nervous, the young man needs a lesson in the art of love and has found just the woman to give it to him.
